Are Your Retirement Savings Funding Methane Pollution

Did you know Australia's major health super funds invest billions in fossil fuels, propping up the nation's biggest methane polluters? This means your retirement savings could be contributing to the climate crisis.

Here at Healthy Futures, we are asking what the big supers are doing to push for methane emissions reductions from Australia's coal and gas super-polluters. Reducing fossil methane is the fastest, cheapest way to slow global heating. We need to pressure the big polluters to be held accountable for taking the necessary steps to pollute less while their industry phases down, and as long as our super's stay invested in fossil fuels - we get a say.

Methane: A Climate Super-Pollutant

Methane is a particularly potent greenhouse gas. It's 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in the short term, meaning it has a massive impact on the rate of global warming. But because of its shorter lifespan, by reducing methane pollution now, there will be a faster turnaround effect, namely slowing climate change.

The Power of Shareholder Action

As super fund members, we have a powerful voice. We can demand that our funds take action on methane.
Australia's health superannuation funds are substantial investors in the fossil fuel industry and, as such, are influential shareholders of Australia's most controversial polluting companies. This gives super members unique and significant leverage to push for change.
This year, we met with AusSuper, ART, Aware, and Hesta to express our concerns about their investments in methane. We have asked what they are doing to calculate their exposure to potential underreporting of true methane pollution emissions volumes and how they use their influential positions to pressure the fossil fuel industry to reduce methane pollution meaningfully.
As a super fund member, you have the right to know how your retirement savings are invested and voice your concerns about climate-related risks.

Attend Your Fund's 2024 Member Meetings and Demand Change

Join us in demanding that our super funds take real action on methane reduction. The annual member meetings are your chance to ask the supers why they are investing your retirement savings into coal & gas and what they are doing to protect your retirement savings against the financial impacts of climate instability.
