Frankston Hospital Redevelopment: Victoria’s First All-Electric Hospital Expansion

What if your hospital not only cared for you but also cared for the planet? The $1.1 billion redevelopment of Frankston Hospital is delivering just that—Victoria’s first all-electric hospital addition, combining state-of-the-art patient care with a bold commitment to sustainability.

Powered by 100% Renewable Energy

The redevelopment includes the construction of a new 12-storey clinical services tower, which will be powered entirely by electricity. Nearly 1,600 solar panels will be installed on the roof of the hospital and surrounding buildings, supplying the energy needed to light and power hospital equipment in this all-electric facility.

In addition, the Victorian Government has committed to using 100% renewable electricity from 2025 for all its operations, including Frankston Hospital. As part of the Peninsula Health network, this redevelopment supports the overall health service’s commitment to integrating sustainable energy solutions across all its facilities.

Environmental Impact: Leading the Way

Hospitals are traditionally reliant on natural gas, with about 40% of their energy use coming from this non-renewable resource. By going all-electric, Frankston Hospital will set a new standard for reducing emissions and environmental impact.

  • Energy Savings: The hospital’s retrofitted design is expected to contribute to a 23% reduction in energy usage across Peninsula Health sites, including the Mornington Centre, Golf Links Road Rehabilitation Centre and Rosebud Hospital.

  • Water Savings: The hospital will reduce water consumption by 3%, saving 2,896 kilolitres of water annually.
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: Frankston Hospital will reduce carbon emissions by 4,084 tonnes each year, significantly lessening its environmental impact.

These efforts will directly contribute to Victoria’s commitment to achieving net carbon zero by 2050.

State-of-the-Art Facilities and Services

The new 12-storey clinical services tower will significantly expand Frankston Hospital’s capacity, providing world-class care to Melbourne’s growing southeast population:

  • 130 new beds to ensure better access to high-quality care.
  • 15 new operating theatres to reduce wait times and streamline surgeries.
  • Expanded women’s and children’s services, oncology treatment areas and mental health spaces.

This redevelopment will enable the hospital to treat approximately 35,000 additional patients each year, reducing pressure on other Melbourne hospitals and improving community healthcare outcomes.

A Major Milestone for the Redevelopment

The external façade of the new tower is now complete, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progress. Construction remains on track, with the redeveloped hospital expected to be operational in 2026.

This project reflects the Victorian Government’s broader commitment to delivering sustainable and resilient health infrastructure, ensuring Frankston Hospital can meet the needs of future generations.

Supporting a Greener Future with Innovative Technology

Frankston Hospital’s retrofit goes beyond solar energy. It incorporates a range of energy-efficient technologies and sustainable infrastructure to reduce both energy and water consumption. Initiatives include:

    • Electric vehicle charging stations to encourage cleaner transport options.
    • Electrically powered tower cranes during construction to minimise fossil fuel reliance.

Building Resilience Against Climate Change

Hospitals are critical infrastructure that must withstand the challenges of a changing climate. Frankston Hospital’s all-electric design not only lowers emissions but also strengthens it resilience because it reduces dependency on fossil fuels. This positions the hospital to function effectively even as climate conditions shift, ensuring it remains a reliable resource for the community.

Economic Benefits: Savings for the Future

The energy efficiency upgrades will also deliver significant cost savings. Peninsula Health’s energy performance contract, which includes Frankston Hospital, is expected to reduce utility spending by 14% annually, saving an estimated $1.2 million per year.

These savings will allow more resources to be directed toward patient care and other critical services, benefiting both the hospital and the community it serves.

Partnering for a Sustainable Future

The Frankston Hospital redevelopment is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Peninsula Health, FG Advisory and the Department of Treasury and Finance. Together, they are ensuring that this project sets a new benchmark for sustainability in healthcare infrastructure.

Supporting the Health of People and the Planet

The redevelopment of the Frankston Hospital aims to improve patient outcomes while playing a vital role in reducing Victoria’s carbon footprint. By going all-electric and incorporating innovative energy-saving technologies, Frankston Hospital is leading the way toward the future of sustainable healthcare.
