Australia’s First All-Electric Hospital
While Canberra has set a precedent with its all-electric hospital building, showcasing how sustainable healthcare infrastructure can positively impact both the environment and patient well-being, Adelaide’s new hospital represents the first fully electric hospital in Australia.
On track to open its doors in 2031, the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital will break new ground by operating entirely on electricity. This means no fossil fuels will power the hospital’s heating, hot water, or kitchen functions. Instead, the hospital will rely on a cutting-edge mix of on-site electricity generation, storage, and grid power. South Australia's electricity grid, which is comprised of 60% wind and solar power, is on track to achieve 100% renewables by the end of the decade. This shift will reduce the hospital's greenhouse gas emissions by 2,178 tonnes annually—equivalent to removing around 700 cars from the road.
State of the Art Facilities
With 414 overnight beds—56 more than the current hospital—and the potential for an additional 20 beds, the nWCH will handle growing patient numbers efficiently. The expanded Emergency Department, featuring 43 treatment spaces, state-of-the-art surgical suites, and an on-site helipad, will significantly enhance emergency care capabilities.
Additionally, all critical care services, including birthing suites, theatres, Paediatric ICU, and Neonatal ICU, will be co-located on a single floor.
